I enjoyed my time at this school and learned a lot from my AP teachers as, Mr. Thomasson and Ms. Shelton. Though, this school has lost a lot of it's great teachers it is not a bad school. We need to quit blaming former students and present students for behavior problems. You can find behavior problems anywhere. Pulaski County is to blame. This county does not care about Jacksonville High. There are still good, smart students that attend this school, and they deserve a new facility with more programs to offer. The city of Jacksonville needs to band together and fight the war for their own school district. Pulaski County is a horrible school district and doesn't deserve to keep receiving money from the taxpayers of Jacksonville.” Posted By: student Quality Score: 4 2008-03-13 “I'm a junior at JHS, and I have to say that our school isn't half bad. When I take a look around me, 'gifted' schools like Mills are having gang riots and others are having shootings. Sure, we have our share of problems, with drugs and test scores, but a good education CAN be found if you actually TRY. I'm enrolled in all AP classes and I feel that I usually learn something in each of those classes. Everyone has that teacher that you just don't think that you can learn from, and of course I have my own, but I'm learning so much in my AP classes that I often overlook that fact. Jacksonville just needs more funding to be able to get to the next level! I love being a teacher. I have seen some truely wonderful students pass through these walls and have had the privilege to work side by side with many gifted educators. The faculty work very hard to provide opportunity for each student to succeed if they choose to take up that challenge. Unfortunately, a great many students here don't want to, take whichever blow-off classes they can find, skip class, start fights, etc. The police are a constant presence at our school because they're neeeded to keep the students under control. Those who want education here really have to work to get it. If we could just repeal the compulsory attendance laws, JHS could become a good school -- too many are just here because they have to be.” Posted By: former student Quality Score: 2 2007-01-25 “I graduated from this school in 1979 and I was shocked at the quality of education that my children received from the school system. JHS does not educate the children of today like it once did. Neither of my children were prepared for collegiate level courses their first year of college and had to attend some remedial classes. But I do not fault the JHS staff. I blame the PCSSD and the desegration program. Jacksonville needs to take back the school and employ the pride it once had. My son and my daughter now several years removed from the program have clearly communicated how simple the classes were to pass. They have also stated that the bulk of the students were only getting by because no one challenged them. There is nothing you can do to change the program, send your kids to Cabot, Vilonia, Conway or Bryant.” Posted By: student Quality Score: 3 2006-06-16 “I have just finished my first year at JHS as part of the school's first year of 9th graders. I have been accepted to the 10th grade, with the option of going to Mills-a school you can only go to with acceptance first. I enjoy the people that are here. If it weren't for them, I'd be gone instantly. I have met some intersting people here. Some of my teachers have become my best friends. Some teachers couldn't care less, but that's from my point of view. I would never send my children here. There's just too much. I know high school is supposed to be a little chaotic...but come on people! A child should never be afraid to come to school. This school has a lack of discipline & respect. But overall, the schools various activities are really good. I'm personally interested in choir and Family and Consumer Science.” Posted By: student Quality Score: 3 2005-11-23 “I am a senior this year at Jacksonville High School, and I can attest to the fact that the school's quality is rapidly diminishing. AP teachers are leaving left and right - my AP European History class was left without a teacher after the first nine weeks. The band doesn't have enough room to practice (we have to use the stage every morning, which is often already booked by someone else), the jounalism department couldn't publish a paper the first nine weeks because we did not have internet access, and the sole drama teacher had her room cut in half...now we have to practice in the cafeteria while the janiotors are mopping. I have thought a lot about what makes a school sucessful, and Jacksonville falls far short. The problem encompasses principals, teachers, students, and the community. I had the time of my life the academics were very good but getting scholarships was hard because one of the coaches threw away my letters. The football team made the playoffs two out of the three years I was there. I love everything about this school. Sure our test scores might be low, but people actually care! The teachers motivate us and also the students that make good grades get recognition and I think that is what we deserve. The faculty cares for us and there is no other school that I would want to go to. However I recently had an opportunity to transfer to NorthLittle Rock High School, and I couldn't imagine leaving. I love jacksonville and, sure, The roof leaks, and some really good teachers are retiring this year, but that doesn't change the fact that we do the best with what we have. I hope that some students read this and understand that it isn't all about fun, and having a teacher hold your hand. The teachers act like they don't care to prepare you for college because they won't even care if you come to class. School, isn't all about fun, it's about growing up. The majority of the teachers don't care at all. I have an ap math class and my teacher is possibly the worst teacher i've ever had. She gives one example and then says 'this is the assignment, do it' and she's so reluctant to help you that it's almost impossible to get it done correctly. No wonder we're getting such low test scores. Everyday in my english class i hear kids using words that aren't even real words! people sleep through class and don't do anything, and nothing really gets done about it. It's really pathetic to me how kids think it's cool to be so stupid. How did we get like this? The whole school isn't all bad though. Parents, it starts with US in our own homes! I do believe students should receive respect. If a child is not taught to give respect and earn it, that is the parents fault. Teachers are not hired to teach our children everything in life. Get involved with their life and school. There is no enforcement of the rules and the students are allowed to be disrespectful to the faculty and staff. You have teachers on the edge of retirement who need to leave the profession. Extracurricular's are good overall, but most of the spending and attention goes to Football (which has still not had a really good season in a LONG time) and basketball. Parental involvement is almost non-existent. The head principal, Mr.Clark is a very good man and tries his hardest but, the assistant principals aren't backing him up like they should be.
